The usual reason is FF elites, who get to board earlier than the unwashed masses regardless of which row they're sitting in. Toss in a few people who need "extra time to get down the jetway", and the usual people who think that the rules don't apply to them, and what you describe is not surprising.
Of course the airlines have deliberately made boarding more difficult by charging for checked bags (unless you're an elite FF type). The amount of bullshit that passes for "carry-on baggage" thee days is simply bewildering....
Most likely they want to be the first in putting their in-cabin luggage into the overhead compartment. What I don't understand is why they still take those large suitcases on board, with all the hassle of security control, lack of space in the cabin etc... For me, better to wait a little bit at the baggage belt.
In addition to the frequent flier elite, there are those that just want to rush on to stow their bags. The airline industry has done all it's passengers a great disservice by charging for checked bags which leads everyone to bring all the junk on.
I love it when you get a gate agent that won't let people board if their row hasn't been called - I wish they'd enforce this more often. Now, a lot of airlines board by group number, and for some reason don't put everyone in one party into the same group. When that happens, I will board with my companions lower number as we are often traveling with a pet and it's faster to board together.
I always try to board at the last minute as I hate being on the plane even a minute longer than necessary. The only exception is if I've been bumped up to first class--then I want to make sure I get my pre-flight drink finished without having to rush.
There's another reason to board early if you have been assigned a good seat: people will "innocently" try steal it from you, and then attempt to guilt you into letting them keep it.
A similar thing can be seen on trains.. As soon as the train stops and the doors open, people try to push themselves in against the stream of people trying to get out..
I do not understand why I have to force my way in when the train will stay there a good quarter of an hour.. Stowing luggage isn't the point I guess, because I see this daily on a commuter train. As if the train would leave earlier, as soon as everybody on the platform has entered it... |
