Absolutely on the button!
The guy shouldn't have sold out to Sun in the first place. On the other hand who can blame him for taking a billion dollars for MySQL. They sure reamed the Schwarz, McNealy and the rest of Sun on that deal.
There is a lot to learn from this case. Next time CEOs will make sure, that former maintainers don't fork the code they just sold to a larger corporation. That needs to part of an aquisition contract.
And also, I think this whole EC mess will make private companies less ambitious to purchase open source companies in the future. Which in turn will make people less ambitious to make the open source companies in the first place...
Personally i'm thinking this is the most problematic outcome of this situation.
Buying an open source company may become a new form of a "poison pill".
"Oracle gives only empty promises for MySQL". Montys new blog entry is even worse...
If deceiving people can earn you some millions, there is a strong reason to do it. As long as it is not against the law. Only bending it, but not breaking it.
Looking at what people do for a few minutes of fame and the hope to make some money in TV, Monty is not handling unreasonable. Most of us can resist, but some can not. |
